Basic Information on Girls State and Eligibility Criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For over 100 years the American Legion Auxiliary has been serving, helping, and meeting the needs of our nation\u2019s veterans, military, and their families. Virginia Girls State is a program of The American Legion Auxiliary. The program epitomizes the American Legion Auxiliary\u2019s commitment to develop young women as future leaders grounded in patriotism and Americanism. Girls State delegates become knowledgeable of the democratic process and how our republic form of government works at the local and state levels. Girls assume the roles of government leaders, campaigning in mock parties to become city and state officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

American Legion Auxiliary Virginia Girls State provides participants an opportunity to learn, in a few days, the mechanics, objectives, and ideals of democracy. \u201cLearning by doing\u201d is the keynote to the success of this program. To qualify for attendance girls must have successfully completed their junior year of high school and have at least one semester of high school remaining. Home schooled girls are also eligible. Each applicant must successfully pass an interview conducted by Unit 28 of the American Legion Auxiliary<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Costs for enrollment at Girls State will be paid by Unit 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2024 American Legion Auxiliary Virginia Girls State program is scheduled to be held on the campus of Longwood University from Sunday, June 16 to Saturday, June 22, 2024. To become a Girls State delegate girls must successfully pass an interview conducted by Unit 28. The Girls State interview is an opportunity for the selection committee to assess the applicant\u2019s leadership potential, communication skills, and to determine if they possess the qualities necessary to thrive in the Girls State program. Those Girls selected for attendance must commit to the program for the ENTIRE week. The final selection of all <\/strong>girls State delegates will be determined by the Unit 28 Girls State Chairman.<\/strong> Interviews for Girls State delegates are scheduled for 10 AM on Saturday, February 17, 2024 at Post 28, <\/strong>17934 Liming Lane, Triangle, VA 22172.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
